Ahmed Saeed and Youssef Gomaa have won the 2020-2021 Student Union Presidential election as President and Vice President respectively, an initial tally showed.
After deducting violations, which were 80 votes for each team, Saeed and Gomaa won 1990 votes over their opponents Abdelmoniem Mansour and Sara Essam’s 1579.
The total before violation was 2070 to 1659.
The Student Court said that an email confirming the election results will be sent next week after the holidays via the university portal emails to reach all students.
This year’s contest was unique because it was conducted entirely online in the midst of the outbreak of COVID-19 which halted many SU activities and left the campus virtually empty in compliance with AUC health and safety precautions.
“[We would like to thank] the student body for being extremely proactive during these times, and during the elections, where more than 3900 students chose to vote,” Gomaa said.
“To all those [who] have placed their trust in us, we are grateful. To our fellow candidates, we thank you for this experience, and we wish you all the best in your future endeavors,” Gomaa added.
“We promise to serve the student body for their constant benefit, and through their input as to ensure that we provide our promise of a student driven union, a union that is powered by student rights.”
The Caravan reached out to Mansour and Essam for a statement but they were both unavailable for comment.
