Students Relieved as Food Outlets Stay Open Late

By: Mariam Mostafa

Students struggling with last minute studying for finals or rushing to complete final projects and papers received well the news from administration earlier this week that food outlets would be extending their working hours and offering discounts.

“We sent to the food outlets on campus and asked them if they wanted to extend their working hours … they have the option to opt out,” Sahar Kamal, associate director of food services, told The Caravan.

“We have been doing this for three years now and most of them are supportive,” she added.

Catering, one of the larger food vendors on campus and the most used by dorm residents, remains open 24 hours during finals.

“It saves much more time to get food from the university rather than going out at midnight if I am sleeping over to study,” Construction Engineering sophomore Mohamed Attia said.

“It gives us spaces and time to study more and not get distracted.”

Meanwhile, Cilantro which is located beside Catering decided to stay open until 1am, and is offering discounts on lattes and cappuccinos.

“we want to support students during their exams and god be with them,” Abdel Rahman Mohamed, Cilantro’s manager told The Caravan.

L’Aroma, which has been a student favorite according to two consecutive Caravan surveys, is open until 11:00pm but they aren’t offering any discounts. They want student to feel their service is available for them mainly for support and not sales profit.

The SU market, meanwhile is offering discounts on its RedBull drinks and offering free coffee with purchase.

“We did this to serve students during the finals week and boost sales,” Omar el Abasasry from the SU market said.
