Students Frustrated with Fitness Class Fees

AUC’s Office of Athletics is now charging members of the community membership fees for its fitness classes at EGP 70 for one session; EGP 300 for one month; and EGP 600 for three months.
Among the offered classes are zumba, yoga, fat burn, spinning and the Power Fit Program.
The Office also offers a personal training program, which costs EGP 100 for one session; EGP 800 for eight sessions; EGP 1,000 for 12 sessions; EGP 1,200 for 16 sessions; and EGP 1,500 for 20 sessions.
The sessions were previously offered by students who were not certified. This, however, resulted in a decline in the number of attendees, Fitness Academy Manager Amira Farag told The Caravan.
The Office of Athletics then turned to the professionals.
“Coaches like Mohab Magdy, the Fitness Grind head coach, have a wide reputation and they give classes all over Egypt. His salary would be high, and in order to pay we need revenue,” said Farag.
She also added that the revenue is used to purchase new equipment required for the classes.
While the Office was expecting only 15 people to register, a total of 54 people registered for different classes.
“I hope that crossfit sessions could take place on campus to market the university facilities and to spread awareness on benefits of power exercises on campus,” Farag added.
Sarah Meligy, a business sophomore, is enrolled in the Breaking Fats fitness session this semester.
Meligy expressed her satisfaction about the sessions, adding that the new professional coaches have been very effective.
“ I lost 2 kilos since starting with Coach Abdelrahman Soliman in the Breaking Fats sessions,” she said.
“It’s motivating; I pay EGP 450 per month which I think is a bit expensive for an AUCian. However, after comparing with prices outside campus, I realized that it’s a fair price since I see fast results.”
Meligy praised the decision to bring in certified coaches, such as Soliman, who appear much more dedicated to pushing each person to meet their own goals.
