After a week of seven different sport competitions, the Parents Association (PA) of Sports Championships at AUC handed out awards to the top winners during the closing ceremony last week.
The annual championship had been postponed for two weeks in mourning over the sudden death of AUC Titan player Omar Khaled.
The PA decided to name the competition in his honor.
“We decided to name it after Omar Khaled, since he was an athlete and we couldn’t ignore his death during one of the sports events,” said Alyaa Abdel Ghaffar AUC Alumna and PA President
Khaled’s parents were invited to the opening ceremony. Everyone stood for one minute in silence in memoriam.
At the closing ceremony, “there were around 22 gold medalist winners, 21 silver, and 20 bronze,” said PA Vice President Nesreen Almahdi.
“I’m grateful to AUC students [because] without them we won’t be able to make it and reach success,” Almahdi said.
Sponsors like Appliances, Samsung, Coke, Sale Secure and others offered some gifts to the winners.
“It was fun,” said Hassan Hesham ElGhandour, petroleum engineering senior and soccer team captain.
“As the soccer team captain and the president of the sports committee, I had to participate,” he continued.
