SU elections go into second round on statistical tie

Early Student Union (SU) election results appear to show that the two rival tickets are locked in a ‘statistical’ tie and that a second round of voting will be called for a later date.
Several sources from both campaigns of SU presidential and vice-presidential candidates Assem Abdelhamid and Ali Shaltout (AA4SU), respectively, as well as Mustafa Gamal and Omar Ghandour (MG4SU) confirmed the likelihood of a second round.
“The count resulted in a [statistical] tie, and the election will be repeated due to the close difference in votes between the two candidate,” Acting Director of AUC Student Affairs Dalia Issa told The Caravan.
The #MG4SU team released a statement on their Facebook page saying they won 50.6 percent of the votes, but that they needed 52 percent to have a clear victory.
No numbers have officially been released by the Student Court, but Ahmed Gebril, an economics junior and #MG4SU campaigner, told The Caravan that candidates Gamal and Ghandour gained 1183 votes while Abdelhamid and Shaltout gained 1155 votes, including the number of invalid votes.
“As stipulated by the constitution, the difference should have been more than two percent from the total number of votes, to ensure a winner. But since in this case, the difference is less than two percent, re-elections has been decided by the Student Court,” Issa added.
The exact date of the reelection remains unknown but Issa believes, “it will be sometime within this coming week.”
