Letter From the Editor

MaramDear AUC community,

After reading page three and the rest of the opinion pieces on page four of our print edition, you’re probably very shocked or very confused and don’t understand how the latest Star Wars movie is being filmed at AUC or how the Zamalek Dorms are being turned into a Cat hotel.

Maybe, you’re wondering why the university kept the story of the mummy discovered on campus so secret.

Since we are approaching April 1, The Caravan crew decided to lighten up your mood with a couple of April Fools’ stories. None of them are real.

We are right in the middle of the semester and we are all cramming for midterms, paper deadlines and projects so we thought we would have some fun writing these stories and at the same time make you laugh.

Some of these stories are influenced by current events that happened or are still happening on campus with, of course, a lot of exaggerations. Moreover, some names from the AUC community were mentioned as sources in these stories. We hope you understand that this is not offensive in anyway and that you enjoy reading our stories and have a good laugh.

However, lately people have been conservative about certain topics, especially political ones.

This is unfortunately reflected on campus as well. Some students stopped listening to others’ opinions and would take any criticism – even satirical ones – in an offensive way, leading to conflict and tension at AUC.

Humor goes a long way in alleviating this tension. It can bridge differences and bring people together, at least for a few moments.

More than anything, our April Fools’ stories on page three are also designed to celebrate the Egyptian talent for the punchline – that indomitable spirit to overcome challenges in the face of adversity with a little laughter.
