Soot Snack (Snack Sound), a new student-produced online podcast aimed at spreading positive vibes, premiered its first episode on YouTube on February 19.

Created by two Journalism and Mass Communication seniors Amgad Salem and Nadia Abu El Dahab, the podcasts focus on current cultural issues from the perspective of young Egyptians.

Salem and Abu El Dahab began work on their first podcast in December 2014.

“Basically, we just want to fill the gap since no Egyptian is doing, or has done a podcast before – [particularly] a show targeting our age,” Salem said.

The duo discuss issues related to the Egyptian culture, “but we don’t want to go into politics because we want to keep it positive,” said Abu El Dahab.

They steer clear of politics and controversy but tackle topics that haven’t been dealt with before.

So far, one episode has been produced and released publicly as an introduction to their project, but not without hurdles in their way.

Salem says they faced a number of technical problems, such as audio glitches, but eventually overcame them.

“It is only us, two headphones, one microphone, a professional camera, and a laptop,” he added.

Abu El Dahab and Salem chose the format of video in addition to audio because they feel it is more “exciting” and a better way to reach their audience.

But you won’t find Soot Snack on Facebook.

“Up until now, we want to keep it personal because the audience is pretty small so we are taking it very slowly,” said Abu El Dahab.
