University Hosts First ‘Community Day’

AUC is planning its first Community Day, a full-day event scheduled to take place on March 4, in which alumni, faculty, students, staff, and employees will come together to celebrate and reflect on the AUC experience.
“We tried to make this day sentimental to the date of establishment of AUC, but that was in July, so we decided it would be the birthday of the mascot that AUC was missing,” said General Manager of Community Day Norhen Ali.
Preparations for the event started last May, when President Lisa Anderson, the First Year Experience (FYE) crew, and Vice President of Communications, Dina AbolFotooh began discussing organizational matters.
The Student Ambassador Program (SA) also collaborated with the FYE crew to organize the day. SA organized an event, “Around AUC,” in which schools and academic centers will sponsor stops around campus to inform students about other activities.
“This is the first [day] of its kind in the country and will bridge gaps between the community,” said Nouran Ghannam, a student ambassador.
According to Ali, the AUC mascot will be revealed during Community Day in a segment of the event organized by the FYE crew. During the big reveal, people will be able to take group photos with the mascot in the Bartlett Plaza.
“From the start, the FYE crew was very much enthusiastic for the idea of organizing a day that gets all the AUC community together as well as creating an AUC mascot that represent[s] [the] true identity of the university,” said FYE President Mohamed Mossaad.
Ali said that she expects a large number of students to attend due to the students’ involvement in organizing the event.
“The event is made for us by us,” she said.
Ali added the event will also serve as an opportunity for attendees to give back to the Egyptian community, as Resala, a charity organization, will distribute a number of containers around campus where people can donate clothes, toys, and canned food.
The Human Resources booth will also acknowledge staff members who have been working at AUC for more than 15 years with certificates for their achievement.
