In late February, the graduating class of 2024 gathered with loved ones to celebrate their achievements at the Cap and Gown Ceremony in the AUC gardens.
The Student Union (SU) hosted this event, which welcomed hundreds of students who were off to start a new journey. The gardens looked festive with the colorful decorations and the time illusion theme, represented in a clock tower and neon light decorations.
“Preparations took us three weeks to get everything done for the event,” said History senior and SU member Mohamed Amer.
The ceremony started at two in the afternoon. There were performances all day on the stage, including a band from the talent show and a surprise appearance by Jordanian singer Aziz Maraka at the end of the day. Maraka performed fan-favorite songs such as Mafi Menek and Ahla Wahda.
“We chose Aziz Maraka to perform because he is loved in the region, and he is new and has never performed at AUC, so we thought that it would be special to bring him,” said Amer.
There were refreshments and facilities like the Beauty 911 bus, an instant beauty salon for graduating girls who wished to fix their hair.
“This is the first time I’ve seen such a thing; this is so cool. If I knew earlier that it would be there, I would have saved time and gone to do my hair there,” said Integrated Marketing Communication (IMC) alumna Rana Ayman.
As students geared up for this next chapter in their lives, they expressed a mixture of excitement and fear.
“I’m expecting a less reserved, stressful life with fewer rules but more routine if I don’t manage it right. I’m very excited to pursue my dreams, but I’m scared of the scary predator called time running after me, catching up to me, and maybe passing me!” said Economics alumnus Ahmed El Gabry.
Others had already started the next chapter but were still trying to find their footing.
“I have already started working since January, so I can say that I have started embarking on my new journey after college. However, I still feel overwhelmed, and it is still not making much sense, but I am excited for what is to come next,” said Finance alumna Ghalia Youssef.
