The Office of Information Technology invited students to visit the WiFi Support booth that was held for a week starting Sunday, September 18.
The announcement was met with interest from AUC students who shared it on different social media platforms and visited the booth throughout the week.
The Chief Technology Officer said that AUC is dedicated to ensuring students have the best possible internet experience on campus. He added that a reliable and speedy WiFi connection is essential for students’ academic success.
This service is not only dedicated to students, it targets anyone who is experiencing any issues with the campus WiFi. The information technology (IT) team wanted to hear from the booth visitors and get their feedback to help them quickly identify and address IT problems.
Lilian ElGamal, the senior manager of this project, joined AUC’s Office of Information Technology at the beginning of February after analyzing some of the issues faced by the AUC community.
“We did not have a solid strategy to follow. It is going viral that people on campus are having WiFi issues; however, we do not get clear answers about the nature and details of the problem,” ElGamal told The Caravan.
The inspiration started when ElGamal noticed that other companies had such services for the workers in case of any connection problem. She then took the initiative and launched this project to help university students, faculty, and staff.
“This week will allow the team to better understand the types of IT issues the AUC community faces and to find solutions,” said ElGamal
ElGamal added that while some issues were solved on the spot, others needed further investigations.
Maram Mahmoudi, a computer science undergraduate, was facing a WiFi issue on campus and sought out help from the IT booth.
“The internet connection on my phone is not consistent. Sometimes, I lose connection while moving from one place to another. The IT team listened to the issue and registered my information to share the problem and its solution via email,” said Mahmoudi.
Students who were not able to visit the booth during the specified hours were given the option of submitting a form designed to streamline the reporting process, making it easier for students to communicate their WiFi issues and for the IT team to address them.
