As Ramadan comes to an end, several student clubs and the Student Union (SU) are racing to continue helping on-campus workers and people still in need of assistance.

Community service clubs such as Mashrou3 Kheir, 3al Raseef and Hand in Hand have over the course of the past four weeks collaborated with the SU’s Student Social Responsibility sub-committee to raise donations and to distribute food packages for the groups in need.

The packages include food items such as sugar, oil, fava beans, salt, lemon, rice and pasta.

Farah Amgad, president of Mashrou3 Kheir, said that the main goal of this initiative is to expand their reach this year and help as many as possible by providing help to the vulnerable.

“Ramadan is the perfect month that we can give back in. Many people are really encouraged to help and give back in every way possible,” Amgad told The Caravan.

Amgad explained that this year’s slogan through this initiative was to “pass the good on” so as to reach as many people as they can.

Through this multilateral collaboration, Mashrou3 Kheir was able to send food to more than 700 families throughout the holy month.

“One special place we targeted this year is Kafr Behtam [an underprivileged village in Egypt]. We aimed to make the packs we give out look attractive and cheerful,” Amgad added.

She said that the campaign gives AUC students the opportunity to get involved and pay back to the community, which leaves a bigger impact on the individual and society at large.

“We plan on [continuing to] hold several activities everyone will enjoy. We will [continue to] help feed thousands of families around Egypt [throughout Ramadan],” Amgad stated.

The SU has aimed to target as many diverse places around Egypt as much as possible. Each of the collaborating clubs has been assigned a different city to distribute the food packages to.

“Besides the food, we gave out vouchers from Carrefour for people to buy anything they might need that isn’t included in our pack,” Asmaa Samir, SU representative told The Caravan.

Samir said that what motivated the SU to distribute the packages and to collaborate with other clubs is the saying “Ramadan beyheb el lama” (Ramadan loves gatherings), used by many in Egypt.

“Because of Ramadan beyheb el lama, we decided to work together to make sure we could help our community in the best way possible,” she said of the SU’s long tradition to provide assistance during Ramadan.

“This isn’t our first year to donate packages in Ramadan, but it has definitely been our most successful. If there was one thing that could bring together all the community service organizations, it is definitely Ramadan,” she said.

Samir stressed that it would not have been possible for the campaign to achieve its goal without the efforts of the volunteers.
