Senior Director of the Academic Affairs Projects at the Provost’s Office Rachel Awad has confirmed to The Caravan that Provost Ehab Ehab Abdelrahman met with students following the December 1 protest.

Some of the students demands included lowering the tuition fees during the online learning period, holding a commencement and putting the pass/fail grading option back on the table.

In an email sent out to the entire community, the Provost said he explained to the students in their meeting that their main request of adopting a Pass/Fail grading option is not in the best interest of their educational process.

“The Provost’s Council, which includes all of the school deans, carefully considered this option and determined unanimously that it cannot be implemented at that time of the semester,” the email read.

”He also explained to the students why any Pass/Fail proposal can no longer be considered for this semester,” Awad told The Caravan.

However, she explained that the Provost suggested having the Senate look at AUC’s grading policy in comparison to grading policies at US higher education institutions.

“I encourage all students who are facing challenges to reach out to their instructors, department chairs and deans. I also encourage the Student Union to maintain direct communication channels with me in all issues related to academics,” the Provost said.

With the fall 2020 semester coming to an end, the Provost assured the community that they will all emerge from this experience “a stronger, more resilient community”.
